Remember - the strength comes from the frame and stringer pieces its attached to. It looks thick by the doores/windows because those have frames. Mid solid piece of skin it's not that thick.

Yeah, lots of folks that decide to fly to somewhere in the path of totality day of - mainly so they can pick spots that don't have cloud cover. Probably a bad day or two to be flying practice patterns at some of those fields.

No chance. Realize that before it closed even the thresholds had been displaced a ton - taking like 1/3 of the usable runway away. Basically no cooperation from the county/neighbors to manage trees to prevent that.

I imagine the issue was they were told how long to expect to hold due to that weather - and that was longer than fuel would have allowed before having to divert anyway. CAE may have been the planned diversion point so they went there to refuel and wait out the weather.

So the "how": For the Flaps, pilots can select an intermediate setting in the MCDU. Flaps will got to that setting instead of the standard one when the select with the flap lever (so they can define Flaps 2 to go to a position that is between normal 2 and 3 for example. No hardware changes...
