SLC is probably my most surprising omission as well, considering I used to regularly fly between MSP and PHX and sometimes connections were cheaper. I got DEN connections a lot, and even had out-of-the-way layovers at places like CLE, CVG, ATL, and IAH.

In December 2005, I flew IAH-MSP on Northwest. I booked the flight in October or so and it was supposed to be an A319. Sometime in November it was downgauged to a CRJ-200! Maybe demand had plummeted due to the hurricane season.

As long as we're on this topic, how does checked luggage work when transiting Canada in this manner? I have an upcoming MSP-YYZ-AMS trip with a 7-hour layover. Would my checked bag be checked all the way through to AMS, or is it like entering the US where you have to claim it and drop it back off?

Sounds like a mechanical issue forced them to return and land overweight. Sometimes they will circle to burn off fuel (or dump it depending on the aircraft), but sometimes the nature of the emergency requires an immediate return.

All of that said, I will say that UA's personal item dimensions are bizarrely small at 17x10x9 inches. Even my regular daily briefcase that I've used as my under seat luggage on every flight I've ever taken is technically too big for them because it's 17x12. Last time I flew UA back in November 2016...
