It could have been worse...in October 2014, an Royal Jordanian Airbus A340-200 struck and tore off the T-tail off of a Delta Connection Embraer 145. The E145 sat at JFK for about a month before being fixed, while the A342 was able to make its return flight, but was retired 3 weeks later, running out...

The plane in question was acquired from the US Defense Department, which spec'd it as a BBJ that can also fly cargo. That said, I expect this to target MLB, NHL, and NBA teams, competing against Southwest Sportsjet.

MIA? ATL? Didn't SA operate those at some point in time in the past, non stop from JNB? In the past, yes. I doubt nonstop though as to JFK is 6935 nmi nonstop, close to the limit of an A340-600 with the needed reserves. To ATL is 7342 nmi nonstop, and Delta deploys a B77L on that route. SA operated...

Of note...the 738s TAROM got were from Air Lease Corporation, who acquired both the remaining Pegasus Airlines order book and some 737s sold by Pegasus to ALC without a leaseback. As for wide bodies, a 763 is the biggest warranted.

The latest A332 add was a former Air Europa plane without a registration change. The 744 due is being leased from AerSale, along with 2 owned 744s, 1 leased from AirCastle, and the others leased from AerSale.

I suspect that the 787 and A350 will replace them. The B789 for EY flies as far as IAD nonstop. As for what happens to these A346s, I wouldn't be surprised to see them spread around the Middle East as VIP frames (Abu Dhabi Royal Flight doesn't need one as it leases a B788 from AerCap as its VIP plan...

For long-haul routes, I would expect Newark to be at least one destination to compete with Norwegian, which has a morning departure from CDG and a late afternoon (rush hour) departure from EWR. This used to be a 747 destination.
