Re: Origin of Airline Names

Laker Airways & Trump Shuttle named after their founders, Sir Freddie Laker & Donald Trump. Ryanair I think was also named after their original founders, Tony & Christopher Ryan.

Re: The UK's longest serving originally named airline ?

Loganair, formed 1962 with the current name I believe, although it might have been a British Airways franchise, so might not have operated as Loganair during that period.

The other one would be Aurigny Air Services, formed 1964; current name 1968.

Re: The end of the A380?

And I am the reverse of you :D ; I go out of my way to avoid the A380 when planning my trips, even if that means a longer layover, and I wish my airline of choice (Singapore Airlines) gets rid of it quickly. I have been flying long haul since I was a child in the 1970's, and the A380 is the most un...

One thing is true, when planning my travels I go out of my way to fly the A380, it's a superb plane and I hope to see it around for a long time. And I am the reverse of you :D ; I go out of my way to avoid the A380 when planning my trips, even if that means a longer layover, and I wish my airline o...

First B737: Malaysian Airlines 1974, KUL to PEN
First A320: I think it might have been British Airways LGW to GIB early 2000.

Re: Have you already lost your time and/or money to just to fly on a specific aircraft?

Yes, almost every time over the past few years when I fly the LHR - SIN route on SQ. I go out of my way to avoid the A380 by selecting the 777-300ER instead, even if that means a longer layover in SIN to meet my connecting flight. This is because I simply do not like the A380 and find it very uncomf...

Re: On which airliner have most people taken their first flight?

According to my BOAC Junior Jet Club, it was British Airways / BOAC B707 G-ARRA Mar 1974, London to Kuala Lumpur. I was only 2 years old and don't remember the trip. The first flight I remember was on Trident in Jul 1975 from London to Gibraltar.

Re: Your longest flight

My longest single flight was London to Auckland via LA, back in the late 90's on an Air New Zealand 747-400. (I can't remember the exact dates; but I do remember flying back by Sydney on an SQ flight a couple weeks later to see friends in Australia on my way home). Prior to that as a young child Lon...

Re: What is the Nonstop Route of your Dreams?

For me, when I was a kid in the 80's it was flying non stop to the Far East from the UK. Today as an adult, I fly it as a passenger :) - LHR to SIN on a 777-300ER. Otherwise, and I am dreaming here, it would be STN to PEN on an SQ flight, which means I would be able to see my family within a 45 min ...

To me Air Force One is the best looking one. A timeless scheme that suits the 747 very well.

There is a lot to see depending on your taste, but I would say London Eye, a river boat tour, a walk around Piccadilly and Leicester Square, and visiting the Cutty Sark.

Rolls of 35 mm film and my old camera in the days before digital cameras. Walkman, cassettes, magazine and book, all now replaced by my Smart phone and laptop. And spare batteries for my camera and Walkman, now replaced by chargers and power supplies.

Re: Malaysia Airlines London routing over Pak-Afghan space?

This always bothers me when I fly LHR-SIN-LHR with SQ, when they fly over Afghanistan. I'm probably worried about nothing but I feel safer / more at ease when I am out of that airspace and privately I wish they avoid it altogether even if it means longer flight times and more expensive tickets. That...

Re: Have You Had Those Times Where A Plane You Want To Fly Gets Switched?

SQ PVG-SIN Nov last year: booked on an A330, ended up with a 777-300ER. Whilst I enjoy flying in the SQ 777-300ER, which I did on the SIN-LHR sector, I do like the SQ A330 and was slightly disappointed when I saw the 777 turn up at the gate. Ironically I had the same seat I booked (52K) but in a dif...

Re: Your Preferred Segment Length(s)?

The ideal sector time for me is 12 hour non stop as I can generally get relaxed and sleep. The worst ones are the 3 to 5 hour night time / late evening sectors as I don't have time to sleep and rest. I find these very tiring as by the time they finished serving after take off and then getting you re...

Malaysia LHR-KUL in 1986. Flew out on a 747-200, coming back on a Malaysian 747-300 combi. I can remember the flight stopping at Paris and Dubai enroute, with the journey being a lot longer than the non stop flight Malaysian 747-400 flight on the same sector that I took several times later in life a...

Re: Reason for your Favourite aircraft bias?

Travel wise, the one plane I avoid, which might surprise a lot of people, is the A380 as I find it very uncomfortable long haul, especially with a window seat. I openly go out of my way to avoid it. My last few sectors have been on 777-300ER and the A330-300 if I can get it, both of which I have had...

Re: SIA signs LOI for 39 Boeing Aircraft

Like others, I was surprised by this: I was expecting the A350-1000 to be the winner, with the 787-10 they had on order to go Scoot. That said, my view is I do see SQ in the future ordering the 777-10 as a replacement for their older A380's and I wonder if Scoot's experience with their 787 fleet had...

Re: British Airways Scraps Free Mid-Flight Snacks

I think this is a mistake that could erode their reputation, by making the distinction between a low cost budget airline and the full service airlines less clear, especially when considering the differences in air fares. Dare I say a BA long haul economy ticket for example will probably be more expe...

My travelling in the 70's involved flying from the UK to Malaysia and throughout Europe with my dad in the army. For me, waiting for my luggage at the end of a long trip and / or rushing to meet your connecting flight if your inbound flight is delayed. After a long haul flight, there's nothing worse than not seeing your bags come out or missing your connecting flight - this has happened to me, which is why I c...

Re: Aircraft are substituted last-minute, seat allocations?

This happened to me two weeks ago on a trip from Shanghai to Singapore. Was not overly fussed as I was allocated the same seat which I pre booked months ago - 52K but on a 777-300ER rather than the A330 I was booked on. It was a short sector but I did wonder how often it happens, what happened to th...
