Re: SpaceX - Tests, Launches, Developments - 2022

It looked like the automatic flight termination system was set off by the booster's boost-back burn and by the upper-stage's SECO. It basically disappeared the moment they announced the proper trajectory. So maybe the AFTS was too automatic.

Re: US wants even more advanced training aircraft

It’s classic “skip on the front end (training), pay on the back end (accidents with combat aircraft).” Not sure training pilots the way we always have is the right way to train them going forward. Probably a better way to do this that doesn’t require carrier qual as part of Advanced Flight but smar...

The USAF needs hundreds more aircraft, so it's interesting that there is nothing saying the USAF won't buy more than one type for ATT. They actually say they'll consider "any and all offerors." KAL/LMT is practically ready to make them now. Boeing starts full-rate production in the next ye...

Re: T-X becomes T-7A Red Hawk

The F-22 does supercruise (supersonic without afterburner), and the F-16N can do it with a clean configuration. That said, numerous articles have quoted specs for the T-X/T-7A has an afterburning engine, which seem excessive, considering mil power almost matches takeoff weight. F-16N supercruise: ht...

Q-58 is a neat idea, and I'm glad it's working so quickly, but is the *no runway* aspect that important? I'd imagine that with that high-mounted intake, they could launch from unimproved, reasonably straight roads, and do away with the complexity/weight of the chute and RATO. It'd be hard to ingest ...

Since the justification for this includes that no president has ever used it, maybe they could do away with the whole nuclear/EMF hardening, as well, since no other president had to deal with atomic weapons against their aircraft.
