My parents had been flying Hainan between SEA and China and loved everything about the airline. Hope they return to SEA. A major constraint nowadays is the availability (or lack thereof) of Russian/Siberian airspace for aircraft to use. Is demand really that soft? Current fare seems twice the amount of US-Europe flights which seems to signal that demand is still healthy. AA may not see it as an option to fly DFW-PVG without the ability to overfly Russian Airspace. DL could make it work out of SEA, but maybe they weren’t as successful in China as would be assumed. Sorry this was NW 87/88 flight DTW-PEK round trip, which operated back in 1990s I believe, nonstop, polar route and had great success.

Can someone please refresh our memory on the future of “one route one carrier” policy here? I think the new rule is route (tier 1, 2, etc) dependent but could be wrong.

The non stop flights took a southerly route avoiding Chinese airspace and I'm assuming over Vietnam and the former indo China countries but the flight time was approximately 12 hours non stop so the flights must have gone very close to the Chinese airspace at times but obviously avoiding it.
