Looks like someone forgot to lock the access panels- unlikely something would have hit it to take out the panels on both sides in exactly the same place. The second picture is a lot harder to explain by an object striking the engine inflight.

Regarding switching tanks, yes i will continue to switch, but if i know that the right tank took a hit because of a long climb or a take-off, and if the right tank is trailing, then the next slot when i would switch to the right tank, I’d keep it on the left 30minutes more, and then start switching...

Depending on density altitude, you should start leaning in climb, even before hitting 5,000'. Leaning in climb gives you better performance, reducing the time spent in climb and thus your overall fuel burn.
