Translation of Lisbon will be the first city from Southern Europe to have a direct air link with San Francisco. I guess they are completely ignoring the existing flights from Madrid and Barcelona then. And Rome if you include OAK. Odd statement indeed. Maybe they meant to say "year round"...

While SFO has a good range of destinations in Europe, it still is the 2nd choice for many EU carriers when they want to serve the West Coast. I would not really consider SEA to be in the same league as LAX, SFO, and YVR. Yes Seattle has some flights, but there are many holes in it's map as to make it a real Asia hub, also it has much lower frequency of flights, and much less capacity (smaller planes).

SJC would not work, like SFO would. SFO would capture entire Bay Area + Plus connecting traffic LAX, PDX etc. I have no doubt that there are many Indians in the Valley, but where talking about a drive or train of 45 min to SFO it's a non-issue! Call me crazy but I think a version of the 787-3 would have been a nice solution + an order of 787-10 for longer higher capacity routes. Looking at UA's hubs like EWR, SFO, and LAX I do not imagine too much gate space growth in the future, they need the capacity on hub to hub routes. Granted the 787...
