I grew up in Atlanta. I can assure you there is a rich history not related to Africa at all. Sadly, it doesn't matter where in the world you are, the "Government" only tells you what they want you to know.
TPA was a very small terminal (with a leaky roof) and all gates were open-air until the current airport opened in the early 70's. Any early wide bodies that visited were handled via airstairs.
