I was involved with a sim company once. We took a shell of a 737-200 and converted the cockpit into a 737-800 simulator. It worked well!

In response to the original question, the B777-300ER is approx 29 tonnes heavier than the A350-1000 at MTOW so the power-to-weight ratio difference between the two isn’t as big as the thrust difference would suggest.

The 787-10 can fly as far as the 747-200 which seemed able to serve most destinations required by airlines of the day. It can for example reach LAX from London with a full load. I would say that is not limiting in most circumstances.

30 years ago I was lucky enough to fly jumpseat in a BA 757 from ABZ to LHR. Full power take-off then climb at up to 5000fpm to FL410 where we stayed for less than five minutes before starting descent.

I remember passing the departure end of 27L at Heathrow on the M25 in 1990 when a Pan Am 747-100 took off. It was so incredible low, I wondered if it had lost an engine after V1!

55 movements (60 at a push) will increase to 75 with the duel runway configuration.

JFK always used 22R for landings even back in the 1980s, especially for European arrivals in the afternoon. Not critical, but 8400ft was reasonably tight for 747s.

I think the range would be ok for this sector as 77E maximum range is 7000nm. Although the dense configuration of the LGW fleet might be a limitation. They have been known to do the odd charter to New York from the north of England and both 320 and 321 neo have the range. The sector length of approx 2900nm does not require an LR or XLR variant so these sorts of routes are certainly possible.

I do warn the pax before landing in BUR/SNA that it’s not going to be a “smooth/greaser” landing. It’s definitely get the wheels down firmly, FO says “SPOILERS”, I respond “MANUAL BRAKES” and override the MED auto brakes immediately by applying the brakes with the rudder pedals while simultaneously...

Emirates has very specific requirements for large capacity aircraft to make their business model work. There are many other airlines who do not have such a requirement and this will dictate the manufacturer offering.

The fourth engine was installed in the stretched 3B variant. It was needed because RR never developed a proposed more powerful engine so HS came up with this curious “Heath Robinson” fix. It was only ever used during take-off and initial climb, basically to get a fully-laden aircraft off the ground....

I was on a one hour 757 flight from Aberdeen to London once. We climbed to FL410 and stayed there for two minutes! I was lucky enough to be in the jump seat for that flight and the pilots told me if was the most fuel efficient profile.

The pavement strength on the main bit of runway would I guess need to be stronger to withstand the hit of a landing aircraft so I am guessing it is a cost saving issue, given that most aircraft can be landed and stopped inside half the distance of the runway’s 14,500ft.
