I don't know the science behind it either, I believe it had to do with TCAS interference? I anecdotally have noticed the same thing on my last couple flights. Yes, I do think it's significantly crowded compared to those airports. JFK and LAX are different stories because they are airports of multiple, individual terminals and largely cater to O/D traffic. My money's on Condor, they serve BWI/LAX/LAS/MSP/SAT/PDX/BOS. Most of those aren't huge stations, but besides BOS, are connected enough to the network to provide some meaningful onward travel.
