Really??? So, what is the upside for the USAF? Another conspiracy advocate I presume???? The AF is not forthcoming about lots of things. It's just the way they are. Well you could say they were C-5A (SCM) birds, but they were commonly referred to as C-5Cs. Of course long after the SCM mod, they became M models. I'm still surprised they did the M mod on them. The first A to M was interesting (9024), hopefully the first one helped them get squared away for the la...

I don't think the M model MC rate is that great. Before I retired, I never saw it compared to the legacy jets, I think it was a state secret. Some things are better with the M maint wise, but others were in my opinion worse or a wash. As the M mod was in full swing, we couldn't get M parts, and star...

Hey GalaxyFlyer, when did drill pay start including BAH & BAS? I retired in 2005, at that time it was 1/30th of a month's active duty pay plus incentives (flight pay, etc). I've been AD, Guard, and AFRES, that is a new one to me. Type II BAH for the first 30 days of active duty, then full BAH.

I think the Travis guys were pretty sharp also. During AMP mod, a Travis jet at Dover couldn't pass an MTEST or something. Minor issue, but wouldn't pass the test. A Dover plane was given back to us with similar issue, we'd have to struggle to fix the newly installed system, which usually wasn't eas...

The M model fixed most of the performance issues and, for a time, maintenance issues. USAF Maintenance is more the issue than the plane. GF Manning is poor. The tech data is poor. The new systems are very quirky. The Lockheed that made the B model is dead and gone. I was told first hand by a LM avi...

I'm retired now but to talk to my former C-17 and C-5 comrades. The late block C-17s that Dover got have been very good airplanes, easy to fix, and don't break much. They fly the hell out of them. Another issue is when FRED has a high fuel load, expect fuel leaks from the extended range tanks. The ER tanks don't see high fuel levels very often, so expect leaks. The M model conversion doesn't rework or otherwise address much with the landing gear systems.
