Re: Air Canada Starting New Winter Hawaii Flights

I checked some random dates for YVR - KOA on both AC and Westjet. Air Canada is roughly twice the fare, and only on Thursday, Friday and Sunday. Westjet seems to be daily. Think I might end up trying Westjet for the first time!

1984 CP Air "Empress of Canada" (best 747 livery ever)
1991 South African Airways
1993 Cathay Pacific
1995 Air Canada
2011 Air New Zealand "City of Dunedin" (probably my last 747 flight)

1. Flying over Afghanistan on an SAS 767 from Copenhagen to Dehli, just at sunrise the start of the Himalayas come into view growing out of the Afghan plain, they seemed high enough to reach out and touch. 2. 1984 Toronto to Vancouver return on CP Air "Empress of Canada" (747-200 I think) 1991 Heathrow to Johannesburg return on an SAA 744, if memory serves the Southbound flight was still on the sanctions busting route flying to the West of the African continent most of the way, but the return f...

My most notable experience with a child on a flight: Nine hour flight from Vancouver to Heathrow, an affluent looking couple with 5 or so year old daughter take their seats in the middle row across the aisle from us. Before pushback child stands on seat facing passengers behind, starts making faces ...

Re: Is motion sickness common on planes like a Boeing 777?

I often get sea sick on ships, but have never felt motion sick on an aircraft. Triple sevens are probably the most stable aircraft I've ever flown on. The only thing thats ever made me feel mildly nauseous on a flight was the smell of waffles or pastries or something baking up in business class, thi...

Re: BA has bed bugs, and who else?

According to this CBC article on this incident, the bugs were most likely brought on board in hand luggage, as luggage is the usual way these bugs are moved from place to place. This has also been a problem at some hotels / motels in the Vancouver area for a while now, a colleague of mine got bitten...

Re: MH370: Malaysia set to announce resumption of search as early as this week

Having read through all the MH370 threads over the years I hesitate to post here. However, I am glad to hear that a search may resume. Surely Boeing must also have a big interest in seeing the search re-started, I would think that they want to know as a company once and for all what caused this. Doe...

Re: On which airliner have most people taken their first flight?

AC Vickers Viscount on a "Christmas Light Flight" over Winnipeg in 1967 or 8. It's hard to believe now but they would actually run sight seeing flights to fly around the city viewing the Christmas lights, the nice big round windows were perfect for that sort of thing. My first "real&q...

Re: AC changes Victoria (YYJ) to Rouge

I've been un-Rouged! It seems they are going back to mainline sooner than planned. I have a booking at the end of August for YYJ-YYZ and return, it was on Rouge 1682, 1683. I was checking the seat map for the flights a couple of weeks ago and noticed the flights (A321) were relatively empty. Then I ...

Re: Are you choosing not to travel to the USA?

I also avoid transiting through the USA, and very rarely go there for leisure. It is often far cheaper to transit through a US hub (SEA, SFO, or LAX) travelling to Europe, the South Pacific, or Asia from my home. I will pay the premium to go through YVR or another Canadian hub. While I have never pe...

Re: Printed boarding pass vs. smartphone

On my last trip a few months ago I tried an electronic boarding pass for the first time, one quick tip which I don't think anyone has mentioned is to take a screen shot of your boarding pass, then you have a copy in your photo's and don't need to rely on your data or wifi at the airport. However, I ...

Re: Reason for your Favourite aircraft bias?

Like many others have mentioned my bias is based on comfort, and I actively seek out aircraft with 2- something seat arrangements. So of course my favourite is the 767, I've made a lot of flights on those, the highlight of which was being on an SAS 767 from Copenhagen to New Delhi watching the sun c...

Re: AC changes Victoria (YYJ) to Rouge

I've been Rouged! I'm very annoyed about this, I had an Aeroplan reward booking for YYJ to YYZ and onward using AC374 (mainline A319). I just got an itinerary change last week that the flight is now AC1632 on a Rouge A321. I am surprised that this route is considered "leisure" as there is ...

Airplane Torture Movies (pre-avod days)

As someone who enjoys movies and flying, and was around in the pre-AVOD days, I always looked forward to the movie offering when I made those rare long haul flights. Almost inevitably the movie would end up being crap, and whenever I see one in passing on the TV now I will associate it in my memory ...

My first 747 flight would have been just before Christmas 1984, on a 747-200 of CP Air. The flight was on "Empress of Canada" from Toronto Pearson to Vancouver. It was also the first time I'd been on an aircraft that showed a movie which was "Stroker Ace" starring Burt Reynolds a...

My experience on Air Canada this last June is as follows: On a 777 flight from Vancouver to Heathrow (departing around 18:00 local time) the FA came around lowering window shades after the meal service, seeing that I was using my window (it was spectacular outside) she just asked that I lower it whe...

Looking back on it I think the movie "Airplane!" best captures the experience. One of my favourite trips as a child would have been in 1976 from Victoria BC to Santa Barbara California. First of all I was of course dressed in my best clothes and I'm pretty sure my dad had a tie on, we each...

It was thrilling! I landed there twice in early 1994, first at night on a Cathay 744, then during the day on a Dragonair L1011. Fortunately I was on the right hand side for both. This was just a few months after a China Airlines 747 had gone off the end of the runway and the hulk of the aircraft had...
