I would imagine most of the expansion needed is on the airside, and not landside. Yes, obviously some expansion is still needed on the landside, as O-D has inevitably grown with all the new flights. But moreso, all of the new flights have significantly increased the amount of connecting passengers....

This has been known for a while. FI's Florida routes are winter seasonal for a reason. They are also rare examples of FI routes where the local market in Iceland is a significant driver. The mouse and the golf courses draw a lot of Icelanders during winter.

This is most likely not a question of building either a runway OR fixing the water system. I'm guessing that the airport is paying for itself and the funds raised by the airport to pay for that investment are not available to do something entirely unrelated.

Difficulties at KEF this morning due to snow and poor braking conditions caused two Icelandair 767s to divert to Akureyri (AEY). They are still on the ground there. I don't remember AEY ever taking widebodies before. Let alone two at the same time.
