Most of them are relatively 2 decades old, which could be a good time to retire the 753 and the 764 (Both of whom operated by DL and UA, but replacement is their discretion). It's potential replacement could be the A330-900neo, 787-9, 787-8, 797 (if developed), or A321neo.

This could be DL's plan to phase out ALL the McDonnell Douglas aircraft (MD-88, MD-90, and MD-95/717), as the MD's are rapidly aging relative to their Airbus and Boeing fleets.

If they did, it'll be allocated for flights to the US (SFO, LAX, JFK, HNL) or Europe (LHR, CDG), and would be based at either HND or NRT.
However, given the costs and the complexity (including the folding wing), the likelihood would be little to none.

It turns out that Delta and American are switching Latin American carriers with each other. Before Delta's investment on LATAM, they had stakes with GOL, while AA partnered with LATAM. It became the opposite when DL purchased 20% of LATAM (with the latter exiting Oneworld).

They obviously have done some financial modeling and feel even if a larger 737NG is a mismatch on some routes, the overall benefit is greater going single fleet than keeping a 100-seater around. If all means, yes. My guess is that they'll use a 777-9 or the A350-900, but they have to use which aircraft is better suited for high altitude operations (whether it's high density altitude in the summer days or snow in the winter days)

Ok, that tells me that DL is competing with WN and AS in terms of SJC flights, right? I've taken aviation courses at San Jose State University, and some students have visited SJC as part of field trips or internships, some even hold their jobs right at SJC.

In terms of modifications, no. In terms of exchanging orders, yes.
The only 737NG variants that are still in production are the -800 and the -900ER series.

If that's the case, they'd use the A321neo to get there (most likely from LAX).
From JFK, they'd have to make a stopover at either LAX or SFO, unless they can get the aircraft capable for flying non-stop (possibly he A330neo)
