Has there been slip-up within the American aviation industry, particularly Boeing?

Absolutely disastrous and my condolences go out to the families of those affected.

More and more airlines will need to be seriously looking at shifting their orders to Airbus.

Further on that, when you get the odd delayed jet taking off at 12/1am, and its easterly operations, there's a good chance it'll take off from 09L.

Re: Heathrow 09L Takeoffs: How often do they happen?

They happen fairly often, believe it or not, after 10.30PM for easterly operations. Especially the summer, not sure why that is (weather better for night maintenance of Southern runway?).

So I'd say, after 10.30PM, you'd find 09L being used a good (roughly) 20 times within a year.

I've always wondered, what leeway (in terms of travel) do pilots have during layovers in other countries?

So let's say for example a British Airways pilot has a 3/4 day layover in New York. Are they required to stay within New York those 3-4 days? Or are they able to hop onto a flight to San Fransisco and then come back to NYC the day before their own flight? Or if they arrived in Delhi for 4 days, want...
