I would argue that the terminal extension at AUS would provide an opportunity for a small focus city operation. The Delta Connection gates start at gate B42 and go up to B55. Delta sometimes uses some of the DCI gates for mainline aircraft as well but that usually requires them to block the adjacent gate (e.g., when B42 is used for a 738, it essentially takes out gate B44 as well). I just looked at faremeasure.com and it shows (when it works) Austin - Indianapolis is 150 pax/day. The DOT number is certainly the more accurate indicator. It's really not needed because so few passengers connect between airlines at JFK. The only terminals which really need to be connected for online transfers are T2 & T4, and DL offers the JFK Jitney service for that.
