So..yesterday I tried the Sigma at the retail store near me and to be honest it's really unusable hand-held due to its weight. I think that the nikon is the best choice even with the crop factor of the D7100

Shooting at F4 and a shutter speed of 1/2000 is probably the culprit then. I hope so because I´ve given a quick look at some older images and are all with a minimum of F6 and a shutter speed of 1/1650 (never higher) due to the fact that the lens hasn´t the VR. I noticed that it´s a little low when i placed a 50% horizontal guide.
I think that with a better center without compromize the EK, a little bit moe contrast and a downgrade for the sharpening it should be ok.
