If 9W owes $150 Million and 18 used CFM56s are at best worth $90 Million, 9W should just find another MRO partner. I don't think 9W needs 18 CFM56 spare engines.

Generally, unions are the primary reason legacies are not able to have an LCC within the group or even a partnership with an LCC. I think SIA Group is the only exception.

Even if a legacy group manages to establish an LCC, mainline unions will make sure they are not successful.

But, once an airliner is at cruise speed and altitude, most drag is coming from skin friction, over half, and this design won't help -- it could make it worse with the lower support struts.
