Taxes. There are some people that avoid using BA, because of the excessive departure taxes in Heathrow. In fact, not to use any carrier via the UK, if your destination is not in the UK. If I recall correctly, AC also had the same deal last year, out of YVR, with both a Rouge flight to LGW, and the mothership to LHR. And then cancelled the LGW service.

Serving DUR certainly makes sense to me, on LH. For Asia, dare I say XIY? There is only just the non-daily FCO and CDG trips on Chinese carriers. How about the government subsidizing the insulation of houses near LHR? It would serve the dual purpose of getting rid of the sound, but also would cut down on fuel costs for heating. SEA has done this, and it seems to be working.

Qatar is also starting a direct DOH-SKG 4w in 3 weeks time.. Excellent choice!
