The 747SP was the ULR plane of its time. Like all other ULR types, it's very much a niche market and only 45 SPs were ever built. Once the 747-400 came out, the 747SP was no longer economically viable. The 400 had the same range as the SP with the passenger capacity of the 300 and much better CASM....

What statistics do you have on that? Just curious? It would seem SFO is not that much larger and competing against UA wouldn't be ideal given that the route is a decent amount longer.
