There never was an order. It was an MoU which per numerous Emirates statements remains active with Boeing and which includes conversion rights between the 787-9 and 787-10. With multiple quotes about operators intending to replace current orders with the XLR it sounds like they are willing to wait for the quoted 2023-24 timescale before taking delivery, rather than getting the LR sooner

The A321XLR will be launched with great fanfare although with 'orders' that mostly consist of conversions from the A321LR

Otherwise, as per last Farnborough, many orders will be announced that are not actually orders or are ones that have already been announced

LHR to Nigeria used to be BA's most profitable routes, I don't know about now but fares were high and there were lots of customers willing to pay them. High cargo loads too. Lufthansa has already 20 Boeing 777-9s on order, the first seven of which will be delivered in late 2020, and the airline holds options for 14 further 777-9s. “These options are also part of our negotiations”, explains Spohr.

Although it there was an intrensic performance issue, surely Qatari Al would have said something about it? Although suggesting an NEO is on the way could make airlines defer orders until that is available.

Needing 2-300 orders for a launch seems a lot, although creating 'orders' via conversions from other orders does help

I think Boeing definitely needs some 'new tech' in addition to the 787, as the current lineup is dated in its origins.
