When I worked at G4 we called them inside turns. Was used to serve many of the seasonal destination cities that were not bases and to balance flying between the various bases. One example was SFB-USA-MSY-USA-SFB, all with the same SFB based crew/aircraft in the same day.

Every airline I've worked for will help get the passenger home. Even the ULCC in the US. They'll either put them on the next flight or even book them on another airline if needed. Not only is it the right thing to do from a human perspective it also prevents any bad publicity.
