I have the first generation 80-400VR and getting a ton of soft and blurry with it. Also found that you need to stay at F 8 for decent results.
Pretty much switched to Tamron 150-600 - results are surprisingly good for the price.

Yes, it will be fine if shooting from Coyote park or Airtrain station. I have a few taken with this exact lens
Pushing it a little at Bayfront Park (I would suggest 400 there)

Performance at 300mm is pretty decent - However heat haze will be a big problem.

I am using it and liking it a lot - but not for a.net shots.
It does fantastic job bulk-processing photos from, say, camping trip - but in my opinion it lacks some features required here (selective sharpening, etc)
