The thrust reversers´ position is interesting. Seems the plane pancaked before they were able to extend completely. So I suppose they had no braking action other than friction.

Re: Plane Crash in Waller County, Texas

I do see the flaps. Plus they say the MD-87 never left the ground. If it had not been correctly configured, it would have gotten off the ground on ground effect, stalled with a rocking wing motion and would have fallen back with an uncontrolled impact. At least that´s how the stalls on the Northwest...

Would fuel exhaustion produce the fireball we see when they crashed?

Fuel fumes are more explosive than the fuel itself (TWA800). I would say yes.

It would also depend what they hit on the ground.

It would not be the first time a PIA crew forgot to lower the gear. It does seem obvious the engines made ground contact an were damaged. Wether they were damaged to the point they failed at some time afterwards I could not say. But I do not think the issue here is fuel exhaustion.

It´s a selfish way to go, due to the potential accident the collision could have generated. But as far as a "good way to go", it probably is. I can´t think of a more painless and quickest way to go. He probably never even felt the collision with the the engine. And it seems it hit it twice.

The only question I have is why the flight diverted. MEX has been operating with that volcano acting up like that for the past 25 years with worse "eruptions". It is probably the most monitored volcano in the world. I guess it was out of an abundance of caution. And it was the correct deci...
