It's weird to me that UA has dropped mainline service from ORD-PVD. Sure, AA entered the market relatively recently, but only with 2x daily E75s. UA's service to both IAD and EWR from PVD seems pretty reasonable to me, and I'm not surprised that there's no link to DEN or IAH as most of the other me...Jump to post
That deal makes no sense! What was the carrot for AS? LGA and DCA slots are worth a lot of money. They could sell them to anyone...and had no need to “unload” them to WN. There would be a line if buyers Selling them would have triggered a more aggressive regulatory review in all likelihood since VX...Jump to post
are these slot leases contestable by other airlines that use LGA/DCA? That's a good question. The DOJ has supposedley signed off on the deal already, so that might limit appeals. Really, there aren't many carriers that could complain. DL/AA have a lot of slots at both airports, so they can't compla...Jump to post

Not a real surprise as I'm sure AS wasn't getting great value from them anyway.
The increase on IAD-LAS to 3x daily is the first time in years that UA has flown 3x on this route.Jump to post
MWAA's April Board of Director's meeting documents are up: http://www.mwaa.com/about/april-18-2018-board-and-committee-meetings Traffic at IAD continues to grow - up 3.6% over the last 12 months, and up 6% year-over-year in February (usually IAD's low spot for the year): http://www.mwaa.com/sites/d...Jump to post

Interesting, but there seems to be little here. The ME3 only have to provide a tepid commitment not to add any more 5th freedom flights from the U.S. to Europe. A minor victory, but not much.
I noticed that PNS-DEN and PNS-ORD seemed to have been extended through November, but there's no fares available except Discount Den. No standard fares available. Anyone know what that means? It's rather common for Frontier schedule extensions to have only Discount Den fares for the first several d...Jump to post
I found DEN RDU and MCO for each PWM SYR and MDT.... SYR gets ORD too I’m guessing this is cause a retaliatory upgauge from United. Expect to see a lot of mainline on ORD-SYR. United didn't retaliate at all when F9 ran MDT-DEN and even MDT-MDW for a short time. I wonder whether UA's strategy has sh...Jump to post
For what it's s worth I think Amazon locates its HQ2 headquarters to NOVA. The area is booming, there is highly educated population, and there is excellent infrastructure. Unfortunately, AA's ILM-DCA flight will get cut back to weekends only starting in late August. UA's IAD-ILM appears to stay at 2x daily for now.Jump to post
I just don't see how moving to BFM improves traffic that much at MOB. It might get you a little more of the Gulf Shores/Orange Beach traffic, but not that much. Bearing in mind that a majority of beach traffic to Gulf Shores/Orange Beach comes by car anyway. Plus, building the new terminal at BFM l...Jump to post
You bring up a good point. AA is in a bad spot in terms of leverage, especially with UA on the other side. UA is still king at ORD and the city knows it. The city is not going to lose if UA gets stronger and UA definitely isn't going to lose anything. It's really AA that stands to lose, and then yo...Jump to post

On the flip side, BNA serves PNS, ECP, CLT, and CHS. WN also has nonstop service to SEA from BNA, but not from ATL. These lists demonstrate, I think, that the connections on BNA-ATL are or will be more about additional options in existing markets than about new markets, although BNA-PBI isn't easy ...Jump to post
5x daily to ATL from BNA. Very interesting. It'll be a bloodbath for a while, but it's really something WN should fly given the size of their operations in both BNA and ATL. I have doubts the 5x will last, I suspect they'll trim down to 3-4x daily, but that should be enough to cater to loyal WN fli...Jump to post
IAD is their SE hub. That's as good as it gets, limits and all. Agreed. And if they wanted to capitalize on flowing traffic to the southeast, then they would have done it through IAD. It's not a bad location to do so. While WN may do it through BNA, it does it through BWI too. I only bring up BWI b...Jump to post
IAD is not the answer to the need of a Southeast hub, IAD is as far South as Southern New Jersey. Much of the State of Delaware is further South than IAD. IAD is the same distance from Charlotte as it is from Toronto Canada. IAD is far from ideal, but it's the best option UA has. If UA was more com...Jump to post
There are certainly some markets where you can say they are better off now, but I think on the whole it is worse. You also have to keep in mind that the decline in fuel prices coincided with the aftermath of that deal, so prices generally came down everywhere from the fuel cost cut, not the swap. Interesting choice. Not sure it will work, though the A321 might make it feasible.

Two things I would like to see from AA. First, at least seasonal or weekend service between ORD and Pensecola. UA has flown the route non-stop for some time. Second would be for AA to start adding some European non-stops from ORD year-round. With the amount of traffic going into ORD these days, it ...Jump to post
PHL-PNS is a bit surprising as it overflies CLT and DCA. DCA-PNS was only added back last year and is supposed to go 2x daily in April. AA's strategy in regard to PNS is quite different from DL. DL seems to prefer just to use a lot of mainline metal and send everyone to ATL. AA seems to want to spli...Jump to post

With NextGen the VFR arrival rate should apply. The two crossword runways will also likely enter the mix as they can handle regional jets and small mainline aircraft. Congress is not going to spend billions on NextGen and leave it all on the ground at DCA. That's just the way it is. NextGen doesn't...Jump to post
Seems like this flight is really about aircraft utilization during the slower winter months. UA has a lot of summer seasonal widebody routes, so this route complements those. Yes, I know UA uses winter for some overhaul/maintenance, but even with that, there's a lot of slack in the widebody fleet in...Jump to post
What you guys seem to be forgetting is that DCA will have a lot more airfield capacity once the FAA NextGen program is fully operational. Given the statutory gate cap that Congress is unlikely to touch, DCA will have more airfield capacity than gate capacity, permitting the FAA to eliminate the slo...Jump to post
What are chances of adding say, 6-8 new slots per day at DCA? AA could add an OKC-DCA flight tomorrow as OKC is inside the peri...Jump to post
LWB actually has a better chance of working then SHD. Lewisburg has the Greenbrier resort and is the closes airport to Snowshoe ski resort just down the road from it. Surprised to see DCA-PNS going to 2x daily. AA just restarted the route in April, so a second flight is pretty fast. Overall AA seems to be making a push to grow in PNS. 173 flew PNS-CHI-PNS in the 2Q of 2017 with a high average one way fare of $260. No idea how many purely ending or beginning in Chicago, but with a major city and lower fares no doubt demand will be meaningfully stimulated. That 173 number is O&D meaning all the traffic was either starting or e...Jump to post
I'd also note that WN has seasonally flown MCI-PNS and has had success. MCI is a smaller O&D market from PNS than DEN/ORD, so markets like PNS-ORD and DEN-ORD can probably work seasonally. On a year round basis, it would certainly be tougher. However, as I've said before, I think 2x weekly on OR...Jump to post
If UA can only fill a CRJ/E145 seasonally on PNS-ORD with TONS of connections, how on earth does F9 expect to fill an A320, even 2-days a week? Same with DEN. While DEN is a bit surprising, it should be noted that WN flew DEN-PNS last summer on the weekends. DEN is a top 10 O&D market for PNS as well. Not sure it will work for F9, but I can see why they’re trying it. PNS-ORD could work but the 2x weekly frequency might kill it. UA could fill more than...Jump to post
I mention a second 12/30 because I think the acceptance rate of 30/hr when Runway 30 is the only arrival runway due to winds is one of the biggest weaknesses at the airport. If all of this growth doesn't translate into closing to profit performance gap with DL and AA, it isn't going to last because Kirby won't last. I agree the Southwest Effect is not dead, though it is diminished a bit. The fare reductions used to be much larger than 15% for sure.
