MH 21
CDG - KUL July 16
B772 9M-MHB
Sched dep. 1200
Sched arr. 0635
General impressions: The flight was very pleasant. At CDG, though as usual there were long lines and waits at security and boarding, the latter went pretty smoothly as did the check in.
The aircraft was in good condition, though showing a bit its age. The seat that I got, the last row on the window/aisle pairs (MH has a 2-5-2 configuration on their B772) was a bit tattered, for instance, the tray table was not in good condition. These sets of salmon colored seats among blues and purples just look a bit old and dirty. MH now operates daily from CDG to KUL using 772 rather than 744 they used before (5x per week). SQ too used to have 744 on the route that is now replaced by the new(er) 773ER.
Food though quite good (I actually like airline food though!) was lacking a bit in presentation (compared to SQ) or amount (compared to EK). The dessert just does not cut it (way below EK) and too boring. Main meal and entree were very good though.
Ok here are the details:
Arrived at CDG three hours prior to the noon departure of MH21; it was indeed very nice to be able to connect directly from the train station RER to the terminal via the new automated train (CDG Val) rather than the old system with the bus.
Check in for MH was in hall 5 of CDG 1 which is on the lower level and thus not as crowded as halls 1 to 4 upstairs. Though after queuing for a bit I got to check in pretty early (9H20), no emergency exit seat was available. I kept thus my original seat which is the last row on the right hand side (40J). The middle row goes until row 41, but not the window/aisle seat pairs on either side (until 40). I spent the next hour drinking coffee, smoking and people watching, before deciding to go to the satellite for boarding (satellite 4) about an hour and 10 minutes before departure time. I decided to go early because last time I flew out of CDG I had to spend a long time going through passport control. This time, however, there are ushers who told people to go to what line%u2026the line was short and very quick at least for French passport holders.
By the time I got to the boarding hall after passing the extremely slow security checks, boarding had well begun and thus I went directly to the jetway and was seated on the airplane a quarter of an hour before STD.
Welcomed at the door by two crews and throughout towards the back there are crew members stationed to help pax.
Cold towels were distributed to pax. Three minutes before STD, crosschecks were made by the crew after an announcement from the cockpit that we were ready. We pushed back from the gate at 12:06 before beginning a very long taxi. Flight was announced to last 12 hours, and it is a codeshared flight with Garuda Indonesia. Whilst taxiing, spotted a Saudi Arabian 777 taking off, a World Airways DC 10 either taking off or landing, UA 767 following behind us and an AF 744 ahead of us. We were number 7 for take off as announced by the captain. Eleven cabin crew busily prepared the cabin for take off. Finally took off at 12H35, after an Air Transat A330 landed. Take off roll was 45 seconds and off to the blue yonder. We flew right into the clouds and turbulences could be felt at several points in flight (above Paris, in the Bay of Bengal and after entering Malaysian air space). Early on, the tail wind was at 107km as we turned and headed east past Luxembourg, south of Frankfurt and towards Prague. At 12H46 our altitude was 23000 feet and flying at a speed of 512 mph.
Soon after take off, cabin crew distributed peanuts that was followed by a choice of drinks of orange juice or water (This was served on a tray, no trolley nor choice of drinks other than juice and water%u2026this was indeed different to MH I flew a few years back when we had trolley service with lots of choices of drinks).
My original seat was an aisle seat (40J). However, the lady seated on the window seat wanted to switch and, being a gentle-ben, I obliged. Soon after the IFE system (Select, AVOD) was fired up, it turned out that the IFE on my original seat did not work! The flight crew tried to fix the problem to no avail. Finally the lady moved to another seat (probably the only other seat available as the flight was supposedly full). So, for once, IFE problem was a blessing as I now had two seats to myself. I quickly marked my territory by placing my backpack on the seat%u2026in case some other pax stuck in a middle seat had the brilliant idea of getting an aisle seat LOL. Having two seats to myself has not happened to me in ages on flights from Europe to Asia and vv. The seats themselves are generously pitched and the recline was generous (in Seatguru, these last row seats were said to be of limited recline, which I did not find at all). MH seats really rock! (This despite the oldish appearance and the salmon colored cover that I found a bit offending). IFE was great though a bit too sensitive and reminds me a lot of Krisworld. All AVOD of course. The neatest feature was the choice of Flight info of which you can obtain all views (satellite zoom, global, pilot view) and all infos about the flight. The annoying thing was that I could not switch easily from films to flight information (I think you actually have to quit film and cannot just switch for a second or so).
There was no menu distributed for the meals. Instead the menu was flashed on the IFE. You have got to be quick though, because this was not presented too long at all on the screen. The choices included beef with fried rice, chicken with mustard Dijon sauce, or a vegetarian option (Indian). By the time they got to my row, only the last two choices were available. I took the chicken which was very tasty. By the way, unlike SQ (or they did last year), there was no amenity kit whatsoever given to pax in Y.
PS
Will post the return and the intra Asia flights soonish...highlights : great service again on the return flight, magnum icecream for dessert, comfy seats as always. Delay of 1 hr from KL due to heat sensor malfunction in the cargo hold. IntraAsia flights: due to the new check in system, slow checkins ! Took almost 2 hours from touch down until my suitcase finally appeared on the belt at CDG 1 aaaargh !

The return:
MH20 august 15
STD 2325
STA 0640
B772 9M - ?RE
OK just a quick report for the return...
A number of things that might be missing from the previous report.
MH still used paper tickets. MH does or did not at the time have internet or phone check in for Y pax. I did get pre assigned seats by calling MH office in Paris.
Departure gate at the wonderful KLIA for my return flight was C14. By the time I got to the gate at 1155 pm, most of the pax have already boarded and I want straight to the plane and to my seat after security and boarding pass and passport checks at the gate.
Crosschecks by crews at 1130 and the captain announced a flying time of 12H and 35 minutes (vs. 12 hours on the way over), cruising at 32000 feet and a take off time of 1153 pm.
Flight was pretty full (I did not have two seats to myself this time and only spotted one free seat in the last row on the other side).
We pushed back at 1145 and taxied and stopped....at 1205, the captain announced that we were returning to the bay as there seemed to be a malfunctioning heat sensor in the cargo hold that needed to be looked at by engineers. At half hour past the hour, the captain announced a 30 minutes repair time and expected departure at 1250. Indeed, at 1240 we pushed back, and took off at 1256 after a 50 seconds roll.
Dinner was either beef or chicken. The beef, which I chose, was a bit dry. But the dessert was Magnum icecream that was excellent!
The crew again were very nice and attentive. However, since I slept most of the time I could not tell whether they did many or few drink runs during the flight.
Breakfast was two hours before arrival in Paris. Omelette again for me. We did encounter quite a few turbulences during the flight and was especially bad as the crew was serving breakfast. A nice surprise: A small cup of banana smoothie that was super good !
I was so afraid that the cart with hot coffee and tea would topple. At one point, the crew had to take their seats and many pax (such as me) were holding their hot drink cup in order to prevent it from spilling! This is a welcome interference to a long flight LOL !
We landed a bit later than scheduled at 726...
MH772 back at CDG:
Again, an excellent flight with MH....CDG 1 sucks, passport control was disorganized and long (several flights including EVA air and Gulf Air arrived at the same time). The bags took FOREVER to come out...mine finally arrived almost two hours after we landed.
Still, the architecture, despite its age still is interesting...

Bonjour Mr. de la Ville,
A nice trip report and I would say a neutrally judgemental one. I hope the people at MH will take note on the lack of inflight meals' sense of presentation, although I can testify that most of the dishes are now taste wonderfully. I found that in other MH trip reports, such as Chrisrad's incredible RTW journey, filled with tasty inflight meals as well.
The 34" seat in Economy class (onboard MH's A333, B772 and B744) and the cabin staff's service are undeniably MH's strongest selling points. And yes, KUL is gaining momentum and hopefully it will last for a long time.
MH's B772s are registered as 9M-MR_. So, on the outbound trip, I supposed it was 9M-MRB while on the inbound trip, that would be 9M-MRE.
Quoting Parisien (Reply 1): MH still used paper tickets. MH does or did not at the time have internet or phone check in for Y pax. I did get pre assigned seats by calling MH office in Paris.
MH has announced that by September 2008, at least they will offer online check-in and e-ticketing thoughout the entire network. Stay in touch with the progress in the Malaysian Aviation Threads.

bonjour Azizul,
thanks for your response. How are you ? and I did get your mail, however, I was not in Djakarta then!
Yep, youre right about the registrations. thanks.
As for the meals, maybe I made the wrong choices this time...the chicken alternative on the way back looked better than my beef. and indeed the nasi lemak looked good too (but knowing or after eating nasi day after day I could not face another nasi lemak LOL). Also I was in Y remember !
the seats are not only better pitched (vs SQ for exemple) but also better padded etc. (vs EK for exemple). Anyhow, MH certainly has a good product for Y traveller like me. Never been on the upper classes lol. I noticed that in the return 772 they had mood lighting in C class but not in Y class, or was I hallucinating ?
On board service on MH is consistently good, though I find the ground service not always.
Given a choice, it would be MH for me..and KL I like more and more (if you have recommendations re hotels in KL, I would like to know....in Bukit Bintang especially, for my next trip).

Hi, thanks for sharing the TR on MH long haul.
Like you, my EY experience on MH long haul has also been great. As Azizul motioned, the 34" seat on MH is the best on EY over 5 hours.
Hmm, I see that MH has found ways to cut cost. Menu on screens and limited drink choices. Real pity. I remembered MH had a good range of drinks during their drink/peanut and main meals rounds. MH also have really nice menu cards too.
Just looking at the meal trays, MH seem to have very mixed up meal tray equipment. The CDG-KUL has both new and old bowls. The coffee cup and the bowl with the bread roll are old equipment (with gray rims). The desert and salad are in the new. The main meal is in a black disposable that looks like it may be packaged from a food processing company out-sourced by CDG inflight catering. MH usually uses their own tin foil for EY main meals (seen in the KUL-CDG leg pics).
On the KUL-CDG, a meal tray equipment not seen before. Are those transparent bowls MH new EY equipment? But then, CDG-KUL uses the new white ones (without the gray rim). So which is the new one? Oh, the plastic coffee cup on the KUL-CDG leg looks really cheap. They have fantastic crew and the spirit of good inflight service (the heart ware). However, MH seems to be hampered by finances which is hampering them to offer their best in EY.

hi there, yes, seems like a mixed match of serving dishes which is why I said presentation of the meal was not all that exciting. I thought that the absence of menu, fewer choices of drinks were related to cost cutting.
Mealwise, C meals (read other trip reports) seem to be great, but in Y I seem to remember it being better before this last flight. Oh well, the nice crew, the comfy seats really make up for the meals though. I was not hungry nor thirsty during the flight, and the FAs you feel really were there to help you enjoy your fllight. And I did enjoy it immensely.

I read that MH were losing a lot of money and were trying to cut costs. Great pictures. Thanks. It's great that they offer 34" legroom. American used to but they reduced it back to 32".
