Thai is one of the airlines that have "modified" 747-300s. The relocation of the HF antenna isn't a standard feature on the 300. I'm not entirely sure where it's been moved too, perhaps the same locations as on the -400 series?

Mhsieh: Most of the earlier 747-100, 200, and some 300 models had the familiar "probe" type HF antenna and coupler mounted in each wingtip. Some 747-300's and all 400's that I can research have the HF antenna located in the forward edge of the vertical fin. On these aircraft, the antenna is a flush-mounted, shunt-fed, slot type antenna. On some aircraft the HF radio is augmented with a data link, and some have newer, faster tuning couplers. And at least one operator has two 747-200 freighters that have the vertical fin antenna. So you may see a few different configurations of HF antenna. Regards,

Thanks for the replies.
I used the HF antenna to distinguish between 747-300 and 747-400D but with this modification, I guess that will no longer be possible.

Mhsieh,
747-300 x 747-400D
Note that this confusion can only arise when you have a 747-300 with CF6-80C2B1 engines compared to a 747-400D with CF6-80C2B1F engines. Both use the same nacelle. Then you must just remember that -400Ds are only operated (so far) by Japanese companies, so no chance to mistake a Thai 747-300 with a 747-400D. Other operators who had/have this "advanced -300s" where Varig, Air India and Air Atlanta Icelandic.
The other -300 engine options (RR, PW, and GE CF6-50E2) are easily recognisable.
