*I want apoligize for the long post, I just feel like being detailed*
Thanks to the Discovery Wings Channel, I have been privaledge to be able to watch the BBC show "Airport". In the last two episodes I've seen, there were problems with 747-400's (ironically both destined for SYD). One was a QF and the other was either QF or BA. I'm curious if anyone knows what was exactly wrong with these two planes.
The 1st one (The one I don't remember which carrier it was) Defiantly had an interesting problem: Apperently a piece of the engine had broken in flight and they had to GLUE the piece back in! (I'm gonna take a sec to ask a detailed question(s) so please bear with me). Now with this I'm curious as to what piece was broken. And What exactly is behind the main blade on those engines (The repairs were being done by reaching between two of the main fan blades.) From the cameras perspective it looked like there was a honey-comb like filter behind it (I think I was seeing things). As apperently the adhesive was taking a long time to cure, they had to bring over a air heater, which I guess did the trick. All I know is that If I had been a pax on the flight, I might be tempted to request to get off! Only because I would be thinking of the UA flight 232 in Sioux City. Grant that I don't think a blade woud come off, but more, that the glued piece becoming unattached and blowing out the engine.
The 2nd one which is the QF flight had an electrical problem, that apperently was causing a "buzzing" sound. The only think of is the sound high energy power lines make. I know that a part needed to be replaced, and at one time the camera showed they were working at the tail section. I'm guessing APU problems? (That is were the APU is locate ona 747 right?).
I was just really curious about these flight and wanted to knwo if anyone knew what had happend to these planes.

In the first case, the mechanics seemed to take forever to find the problem. They showed them following an engineering schematic with confused looks on their faces. I didn't feel very confident that they knew what the problem was.

Kearnet,
I caught a few minutes of the show you spoke of. The panel that was glued back together was the fan shroud of the engine. This is a panel, as you had described, made of a composite / honeycomb material. the purpose of this panel is to remain a 'rub strip' for the tip of the fan blades and will wear down as the engine operates. It is permitted to have a certain amount of this missing and still operate the engine. I do not recall how much. A large percentage of the time required to return an aircraft back to service is obtaining the correct refrences in the maintenance/structural/engine manuals. Even if this part came off in flight it would not cause any damage to the engine as you are thinking, have no worries.
