Okay, well, I experienced my first 744 ride ever about 4 days back...and my wife and I were towards the back of the economy cabin on SQ (around row 60 or so...). The takeoff from SFO seemed very wallowy, like the nose was wandering left and right, almost as if the yaw damper was inop. We were probably pretty close to max. gross, and every single seat in economy was filled for the trip to HKG. Is this normal?
The subsequent takeoff from HKG to SIN (3.5 hour leg) didn't seem nearly as wallowy...
Rulebooks and regulations are made from paper...and they do a poor job at preventing metal from contacting rock-Ernest G
Yes, it's pretty normal especially towards the back of the aircraft. The lateral movements are somewhat exaggerated back there plus at MTOW the 744 isn't exactly a barn burner on performance with the flaps and LE out. Once it gets cleaned up and accelerates to 340KIAS, it's pretty stable.
The flight out of HKG was at most about 290-300 Tons which is about 100Tons below MTOW.

IV have had reports from both crew and passengers saying something very similar in the past, on the few occasions when I have told the commander its either been ignored or a comment has been passed about the configuration (not sure what was meant to be honest).
Iv also had reports from crew and pax (and felt it myself) that people seating around the front of the wings (rows 17 thru 20 and the crew jump seats at exits left and right 2) of an odd vibration around five seconds after the B744 had lifted off. PAX have said they felt it for around the first 10/20 seconds after lift off. I thought it could be the gear, but crew and pax around the area don’t feel the vibration (around the same time).
It tends to happen on B744’s which are taking off very heavy (on ultra long haul flights).
I wonder what could be causing it? The pitch? Speed?
