Stains On 747's Nose - What's The Cause?

Hi guys.

As these photos show, you can really see the difference between a 747-400 Cargo plane that's clean and one that's dirty with stains.

My questions are about the KLM 747 with all the stains that are streaking back from the windows and doors and especially the cargo door seal on the nose.

What has caused these stains?

Is it dirt & dust from the load inside the 747's cargo hold that's leaking out through tiny holes in the fuselage due to cabin pressurization?

Or is it simply a matter of dirt & dust in the low altitude levels of outside air that the 747 is picking up along small body protrusions during it's arrival and approach to an airport?

I think these stains are more likely being caused by dirt in the polluted outside air that surrounds most major cities ...... because the angle of the long stains tend to indicate a nose up pitch attitude like that which would be used on approach for landing. Also, I'd be surprised to learn that a 747's fuselage could have that many pressurized air leaks.

I still wanted to ask this question to find out the answer for sure.

Thanks,

Chris  Smile

Hello Starlionblue.

Thanks for your reply.

Wow, there sure is some pretty dirty air floating around this planet.

I'm sure the air over Greenland (based on your flag) is much cleaner then where most people live.... like here in Toronto or where you are in the Eastern USA.

Never actually been to Greenland. The story behind my use of that flag is mostly me being a jackass about an old "lack of an EU flag" discussion a while back.  Wink

Well that's OK. It's nice to see their flag being used. Perhaps one of these days you'll stop by for a vacation. I hear Greenland has beautiful beaches!

I do really like the colour of their main airline's aircraft.

I remember David Letterman saying these words a few years ago about air pollution ....

"The smog was so thick in New York City today that when I stepped outside this morning and took a deep breath ..... I chipped a tooth!"

I'm sure that doesn't happen in Kangerlussuaq (Sondre Stromfjord), Greenland.

Airflowing past uneven surface.Extruded screws in the Airflow can cause a similiar effect over a long time.
Regular cleaning can help.

Its those new jamaican pilot's smoking weed in the cockpit the whole time!!

But seriously its were there are little gaps between the joining surfaces and bits of dirt, grease and water get stuck there and then streak out due to the high speed.

I never thought of it that way.

Nicotine stains used to help trace leaks during Smoking days.
