I don't see much damage there, nothing that can't be deferred....... Wink

Wow, thats got to cause such a sick feeling in your stomach when you see/hear/participate in that kind of carnage.

The right stabilazor was badly damaged when the aircraft was pushed into a hydrolic platform, while being parked on J-ramp.

I'm guessing they meant "left"--either that or the right horizontal tail must be in really rough shape...

Perhaps I'm jumping to conclusions, but I think the point is that a 747 is badly damaged and the individual who posted the link was merely announcing some interesting and newsworthy content to this site. As disappointing as it may be to see this kind of damage to a bird, I for one appreciate the chance to see it.

I bet Surinam isn't too happy about this. Isn't that the only 747 they have in service?

Although the elevators are pretty fragile, and it doesn't take much of a hit on the trailing edge to cause major damage, I 'd be interested to know if there was any damage to the stab Jackscrew assy? After all, the elev/stab assy is only supported by the 2 brgs and the J/S in front, and if you back into something on one side, there's a good chance for side-load damage.

So if I banged my head on the elevator, could it fall off? I never want to fly on a 747 then!

Are you sure you're 16?

Could which fall off, the elevator or your head?

Any structure is 'fragile' when its subjected to forces beyond that of which the airplane was designed and tested for. Contact with a fixed object from behind the elevator certainly qualifies as 'not designed for'. Could designers build aircraft to be stronger? Sure, but at the expense of weight....you'd be much better off making sure that people don't drive airplanes into big pieces of equipment though.

Hiya,

Quoting CCA (Thread starter):
There are some good pics on MyAviation.net of a recently damaged Surinam Airways 743.

The pics are not good enough for A.Net, so i posted them on MyAviation.

Glad you like them.

Damage seems to be very substantial. An Air Pullmantur (Spain) has been leased in to cover for the damaged 747.

Bye, Chris.

Someday i'll fly away......

Not I'm not sure I'm 16 because I'm 18. My comment was a joke. If cracking any kind of joke is a serious offence and makes anyone seem like a kid or a baby or whatever then what's the point in being alive, bore?
