Got to see my first go around by both a PIA 747 and commuter plane on the Canarsie Approach today. Pretty cool! The 747 caught my eye because it was coming in very high and off the path, the engines revved and around she went. What suprised me was that a commuter plane that was ahead of it was also initiating the procedure. Does anyone have any info as to what happened to cause this?

Just a routine operation.... go-arounds happen hundreds of times a day all over the place. Reasons could be anything from spacing was off, pilot-initiated, aircraft on the runway, etc.
But, I'm just sooo glad that you can go to airliners.net to hear reports of such routine everyday events whenever seen by a member.

These things happen every day. The majority of "Go-Arounds" will be due to landing traffic ahead still on the runway. This was the cause of my only go-around so far flying the 757/767 for 3 years.
Also pilots may quite rightly initiate a go-around if all doesn't look well.
I used to love the smell of Jet-A in the morning...

Mostly its traffic on RWY, or unless the pilots mess up on approach.

I saw a pretty cool go-around at JFK last summer, also on the Canarsie approach. I found a nice spotting place in a public park just across the highway from the Ramada Inn, right under the approach path for 13L. After an enjoyable hour or so of spotting, I saw a TAP Air Portugal A340 landing in the distance on 13R, which was a bit strange, as that runway was being used for departures that day. Then on my scanner, I heard the controller say "Air Portugal, YOU ARE ON THE WRONG RUNWAY - GO AROUND IMMEDIATELY!!" After he initiated his go-around, another aircraft keyed in on the frequency with "wow, that's kind of scary..." The TAP A340 appeared again in about 15 minutes on the proper 13L approach, and I snapped an OK picture of it as it went over - of course it got rejected by airliners.net.
