I'm Flying On An E-Ticket For The First Time

Hi, All
I am going to be traveling on an "E-Ticket" this summer and I have a few questions. This will be with Continental/Northwest Airlines.

I will have baggage, so can I check in at the ticket counter and receive my boarding passes there? Or do they take my bags, check them to my final destination and have me use the "E-Ticket" Machine or flash my ID at the Gate and they get my pass there?

Can I fly the entire journey without even touching a ticket?

Can I get all my boarding passes at once, (Beginning Station) from the E-Ticket machine, if I chose to use this.

And all I need is my State Issued ID ? They will do the rest at the Gate.

Thanks for any info, and I am excited about this net method being introduced to me.

It depends on whether you have a OnePass card with magnetic stripe on the back. If you do, you can pretty much bypass all the lines as you've mentioned above. Otherwise, you won't find E-ticket much different from paper tickets (at least that was my experiences traveling on airlines which I did not hold their FF cards).

You can use a major credit card in the etkt machines also.

Once you get your boarding passes the agent will have the bag tags for you.

OR, you can check your bags curbside and go right to the gate for a boarding pass.

DONT FORGET....when on the NW operated flights, you can check in on the internet which is AWESOME. Then you just print your boarding passes, check your bags curbside, and walk right onto the plane!!

I usually fly AA and have been using E-tickets for the last several trips I've taken. I didn't really think much of it till December......

I arrived at AUS about 90 minutes early for my flight to MSP via ORD. The line for the ticket counter had filled the entire queue area and was nearly reaching the entrance door to the terminal. Standing in line I noticed a computer near the ticket counter that said "One stop" above it. Not in any hurry...I went to check it out. This is has got to be the best thing! I slid my credit card for identification, entered my frequent flyer id (not required) answered a few questions about baggage and this little terminal printed out my boarding passes and luggage tag for my checked bag. In less than 5 minutes of walking in the terminal I was seated at the gate waiting for my plane.

Austin was one of the first cities to receive this system and AA is adding it to other cities as well. VERY convenient. Unfortunately I wasn't able to do this for my return flight from MSP...they had the terminals but said "coming soon" above them. I believe CO has something similar.

Unless you have a OnePass like Watewate mentioned, just do like you always have. Only difference is that you don't have to remember to take your ticket to the airport. I now always fly with e-tickets and I check my bags and get boarding passes like I always have. It sounds to me like you don't fly all that often, so you don't have to worry about getting boarding passes and stuff online or ahead of time or about curbside check-in if you don't want to. That stuff is for the people you see running in the terminal screaming at and cutting people in line because their flight is leaving in two minutes and forty six seconds.  Smile For just a regular trip I would just check in the good old fashioned way, that is to keep it simple for you. I usually do it that way and I fly about twice a month, but I sometimes do curbside if there isn't a line and is obviously going to speed things up and make for some extra time to watch the planes. If you decide to do curbside, then you just go to the gate and get your boarding pass there instead. My advice would be to get to the airport early, like an hour or hour and a half, and just relax. Check in the way you prefer and take a seat and watch some planes and enjoy the trip  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Continental has those machines at every airport they fly to.

Also I heard from a friend that the base member cards for World Perks have magnetic strips.

Continental does not have machines at every airport they fly to. Only the major ones numbering a few dozen.

To my knowledge that is not true. They do have a lot of them. My guess is about fifty accross their larger airports. But every detination? Where do you get that from? I have flown CO just twice this year, but I don't believe they have them at every destination. I would think I would have heard about it or something. Anyone around here work for Continental that could verify this? I must admit I would be impressed if it is true. Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Watewate, my apologies. I missed your post the first time through. I didn't mean to repeat what you said. I wouldn't have posted if I realized you already answered the question. My bad! Smile/happy/getting dizzy

Continental currently has more than 240 eService Centers in 50 U.S. airports. This is straight from the CO website, so it should be accurate.

The only US carrier with more e-ticket machines is Alaska (even though they only carry a fraction of the passengers CO does). However, United is actively installing e-ticket machines, and in the not-too-distant future, they may have more e-ticket machines installed than either AS or CO.

If you have your e-ticket reciept, check your bags at curbside, then go to the gate. Depending on what airport you are flying out of, you may be able to check you bags using the e-ticket machine. If you do have a OnePass account, make sure you use the machines, as CO has been giving 1000 bonus miles for using the e-service center (e-ticket machines) for check in. If you have any questions, call CO res, or ask a tkt counter agent. Hope you have a great flight, please post a report!

Peace,
COexERJ
