Hi everybody,

I'm a Business Engineering student and for my materials science course, I need to do a report on aircraft safety. There are 3 parts:

1. Which safety standards are applied to aircrafts (both during development and during operations)?

2. Which tests need to be done before an aircraft can take to the sky? Are these only visual tests or is any kind of technology used for this? Which non-destructive tests have been developped for this means?

3. Are there different regulations that apply for composit materials than for classic materials?

I don't expect you to answer these questions for me, but I'm looking for some more information regarding these subjects.

Any help is appreciated!

Thanks,
Tom

Are you refer to the airframe only?

For instance, the FAA and JAA requires evacuation testing with half the exits blocked and performed under "emergency conditions" (i.e. reduced lighting, pax blinded to which exits are blocked). All pax must be out within 90 seconds for certification.

Although it doesn't have to do with the structure, it is definetely something that must be done before the plane is certified.

And even before then, each evacuation slide has to be tested to meet flame, temperature and wind challenges.

Release your seat-belt and get out!

Yes, I was referring to the airframe. I was especially thinking about the visual inspections that have to be done before each flight by one of the pilots, other periodic checks of the airframe and off course big maintenance checks (D-checks?) where they inspect the structural integrity of the airframe and how they do this.

I also seem to remember that there are certain rules to how many cycles (pressurization/depressurization) an airframe is allowed to have before something needs to be done. But again, I don't know where to find more info about this. Are these rules made by the FAA an other equivalent agencies?

Thanks,

Tom
