I'm doing a little personal, side research project, and I was wondering what our members could tell me about the current operating status of some African airlines. Airlines I would be most interested in are:

Air Gabon
Air Madagascar
Air Namibia
Air Zaire?? - I believe they no longer exist, correct?
Air Zimbabwe
Cameroon Airlines
Sudan Airways
TAAG Angola

. . .as well as any others of note. As you can see, I'm really looking at the smaller African airlines, as I've already familiarized myself with the larger ones (Air Algerie, Royal Air Maroc, Kenya, Ethiopian, etc.).

Whatever anyone can enlighten me on as far as operational statistics (fleet, pax. numbers, routes, etc.), financial health, current outlook, etc., would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Hamlet69

Also, any links to these airline's official websites, if there are any.

Air Madagascar has recenly introduced a new revised livery.

A second B737-300 has been added to the fleet. They will replace the two old B737-200 in service since 1969 for 5R-MFA and 1972 for 5R-MFB.

They operate also a second B767-300 since April this year.

AirMad also operate a small fleet of ATR42 and Twin Otter DHC-6.

All airlines are up and running with the exception of Air Zaire. Well, perhaps on paper it still exists but not in practice. Main international Congo airlines these days include Hewa Bora and LAC, if I am not mistaken.

Is LAM Mocambique still in operation?

I see that their sole 767 was sold/leased to AM for at least 5 years. However, they also had at least 3 737-200s. Anyone know?

Here is the link for Air Madagascar, it is in German, but you can get a reasonably decent translation from altavista babelfish.

Speedbudgie,

Thanks for the link. I have a basic understanding of German, so it was actually fun surfing the site.

So Cameroon Airlines overcame their Aug 04 financial difficulties? If not, has a successor emerged?

As I'm heading there in Feb and hope to fly domestically this is of particular interest.

Air Madagascar seem in optimistic mood having recently launched MXP and BKK.

Ghana Airways renaissance?

UM is to be launching a HRE-SIN-BJS service and increasing frequencies on the LON route. It was temporarily suspended from IATA ticket billing system due to non payment of bills, but that situation has been sorted out.

Air Zimbabwe's website is www.airzim.co.zw Not too informative at most of its out of date given the current situation in the country.

Haan don't TAAG have a 744 too? I'm sure I've seen one at JNB.

Hi all,

I mean I know that QM is realtively small, but why is that people continuously ignore it as one of the superior service providers in the region??? I find it rather strange that no-one ever mentions QM in ay requests.

Anyway they currently have the following fleet...

1 B737-300
2 ATR 42
2 Cessna Caravan

They operate from LLW and BLZ to the following cities (Including code share flts)...

NBO
EBB
DAR
DXB
LUN
HRE
GBE
JNB
DUR
MPM
BEW
LHR
MBA

For such a small airline, I think they have done quite well.

I also have a correction for Haan on his UM fleet, they currently have the following fleet....

2 B767-200ER
4 B737-200ADV
2 BAE 146
3 Cessna Sky Caravan

Also please note that BP whilst not a major player either, is also worth mentioning...

4 ATR 42

And then you have Zambian Airways with 2 Beech aircraft, I cannot be sure of the model now.

Can anyone confirm if Air Comores ever got off the ground with their A319 from AF? Was this just a rumour?

Thanks and brgds,

QM001 (167 Air Malawi)

QM001 - re QM flying to

DUR, LHR, MBA, EBB, DXB

I can't find any current schedule for these routes, either operated by QM or codeshare on anyone else. Maybe these routes used to be operated, but not any more, it seems.

Hi Hamlet!

The info from this year's JP is as follows (info from Apr04):

Cameroon Airlines (UY):

1 BAe HS 748
2 757-200
1 767-200ER
1 767-300ER
1 747-300

Air Gabon (GN):

1 F.28-2000
1 737-200C
1 737-400
1 767-200ER
1 747-200M

I'm not so sure how accurate this is now and I have no idea of any financial data. I know both the two above have had some major problems....

Take Care

Cameroon seem to continually change aircraft due to tech issues
They also operate a F27 domestically and regionally
They do not operate their 747

Air Gabon also are not operating their 747.Does anyone know if it is
parked up in LBV!?

Cheers!
Tony
