Hi all,
I've seen some fantastic brochures of Berlin Brandenburg airport (to be constructed at basically the same place as current Schönefeld incorporating one of the two existing runways), but what is the real status of the plans? As the German government has to make ends meet, can we expect construction soon?
The airport situation in Berlin is very odd, three airports with very few intercontinental flights for the capital of the EU's largest economic power. The existing situation is obviously a result of the Cold War division in sectors, but as Germany reunited about 15 years ago, does it make sense for this situation to continue much longer? I have always wondered why they didn't close Tempelhof (almost in the centre) straight away and start constructing Brandenburg when the economy was still better than it is now.

The program is at least unofficially on hold. Berlin is broke, Brandenburg is broke, Germany is broke. No one knows how to pay this thing. Currently the planning is:
Relocation of some 1000 people: till 2005:
Commencing construction: 2006.
Going online: October 2010
TXL offline: March 2011.
I doubt it will happen that way.
Exsample: MUC. It was planned in the mid-60s, and supposed to open in 1972 (with 4 runways and 2-3 terminals initially). It opened 1992 with 2 runways and a single terminal. Everyone called it megalomaniac. in 1995 the first expansion project were under way and in 1999 the 2nd terminal was under construction. Next thing will be the 3rd runway.

Thanks, that is interesting info. In fact, a colleague of mine told me today that there are plans of shutting down Tempelhof by October this year, can you confirm that?
