Anyone who was at SXM on 4/20/2004 saw the American Airlines 757 come in to high and do a go around. It was pretty cool. you could see from way out it was coming in to high. As soon as the 757 crossed over the runway threshold, you could hear the increase in power, the landing gear go up and partial flap retraction. It took about 10 minutes for the AA 757 to circle back around and finally land again. Everyone on the beach was clapping!
What was just as interesting, was in that 10 minute span, another AA 757 had positioned itself for take-off. So, you had two AA 757's facing off against each other on the same runway. And of course, I have to forget my camera, missed photo op. Just thought I'd share! Anyone else see this?

Man, that would be an awesome sight to see. I would have loved to seen that myself. Unfortunately, when I was there in November, nothing like that happened. As a matter of fact, I had my cameras, but the days were too cloudy for any good shots

Wasn't there this week, unfortunately, but I saw a US Airways 757 go around at SXM back in February. The AF A340 had just landed and was slow clearing the runway, meaning that a Liat Dash 8, which had already taxied into position for takeoff, was blocking the approach end. The 757 hadn't reached the beach yet, though--it did a fairly tight 360 over the water, then landed.

I'll be at SXM in two weeks, and I wish that I see something interesting like that! Last time I was there it was business as usual. No interesting face-offs on the runway. No missed approaches. No unusually low approaches. But who can complain when you're sitting at the Maho Beach Bar drinking cocktails while watching arrivals and departures in paradise?

Mikeycpvd, I believe it was the latter. All I know is that it was seconds away from landing, then the engines suddenly spooled up and it turned away rather sharply, headed back out to sea, made a loop and landed a minute later. I don't know if that meets the technical definition of a "go-around," but it definitely "went around" in the most literal sense.

someone just asked if a go around is newsworthy. while it might not be to some people, its awesome to hear the engines spool up on the757 as its about 25 feet from touching down. I know it had the attention of everyone on the beach that day. Anyway, I shot some of my own videos of the AF340 and a AA 757 landing. When I'm back in NY, I will try and post the links on here. Back to the beach.
And if its allowed, may I recommend the Caravanserai beach resort for lodging needs? Its the place to be for sure!
