Probably Alaska as AA to LAX then Qantas... Or Maybe WN to LAX as a separate ticket, then Qantas, UA or NZ to SYD... Ithink You can also fly HA from SMF with a stop in HNL

You can fly UAX to SFO (1 flight is still mainline) or LAX and continue on UA down under. I don't believe NZ flies nonstop LAX-SYD anymore.

AS/QX/Quantas code share that is indeed your best bet.

It is a long trip. Dont fly on Hawaiian Airlines, unless you want to be nickel and dimed all the way to OZ! Best choice would be to fly on Alaska to Los Angeles and then transfer to Qantas. Qantas, is by far miles above United Airlines in service, performance, and quality. Stick with the proven leader - Qantas!

Really? I have flown the AUS/Lax run about 12 times, and the flights over HNL I had with HA last September were some of the best in memory. On time departures, pleasant crew, clean new 763 aircraft, edible food. Sometimes flying the underdog has many advantages over the monopoliser.

Depends on the regional you want to take.
Alaska/Qantas RNO-LAX-SYD....you will fly a D-8-400 to LAX in Horizon
-
United RNO-SFO-SYD....you fly a CRJ to SFO on Skywest. The only mainline flight is at 840a and the SFO-SYD flight leaves at 1030pm
