Just to remind you folks that monitors need to be recalibarated periodically (say once a month) and to point you to a very simple but effective "step wedge"

http://members.austarmetro.com.au/~julian/photography/images/stepwedge.htm

to help you set the correct black point. To use this, I suggest you crank the contrast up to 100% and then adjust brightness until each step on the wedge is clearly discernable and the difference between each step is roughly the same.

Of course this will do nothing for colour adjustment, but getting the black point right is the critical first step.

Once you have the brightness correctly adjusted LEAVE IT. Make any "eye comfort" adjustments using the contrast control.

Cheers,

Colin

You can also use this calibration software to get the necessary contrast and colour calibration screens to adjust your monitor correctly:

Someday, we'll look back at this, laugh nervously, and then change the subject.

I jsut got my new video card and computer, but my montior is the same form my previous comp.

I have a problem with darkness. I have the brightness all the way up, but it still looks dark to me. I also have the contrast all the way up.

Is this a calibration problem?

Weird, because I was jsut about to post about this.

Also, even more importantly, check your SMOKE DETECTORS once a month too!  Big grin

Hmmm - firstly try the URL I referenced above - can you see all the steps in the strip?

Secondly, your card may have a utility to adjust the gamma - check its set to 2.2 (I've had cards which installed as 1.8) - you may have a feature allowing you to adjust gamma manually.

Finally, does you monitor have any controls for colour temperature settings - I keep mine at 6500K ("daylight"), but lower temperature are supported, which can look dark as well as overly warm.

Cheers,

Colin

Yeha, my vidoe card has all kinds of options, but when I change them, the "apply" button does not highlight, so changes can't be placed in effect.

Putting the gamma to even 1.8 is enough to make me put SPF 40 on my face. That's nuts. I need to wear a spacesuit for that.

My monitor adjustments and video card adjustments are different though. So both need to calibrated appropriately. It'll take time which I don't have right now. lol
