Hi all,
As most know, some hit counters are not being updated properly. This happens with specific searches such as a category or range search. The good thing is hits are being counted and by no means lost, they are simply not updating on the photos.
The short term solution is to update manually the hit counters once a day (starting today). A long term solution has not fully been found. Finding a long term solution is a top priority for us but we want to dedicate the proper time to find the best solution. We'll update you more when we have a definitive plan. In the interim, the hits will be updated once per day.

Blimey - that sounds like an arduous task! For all the photos? I am imagining some poor person having to go through over one million photographs and doing some sums for each one .

Paul, i dont think this has to be done manually for every pic. I think DM wil run a Query on the database wich will update the view counter.

It's a punishment for misbehaving members of the crew, like being given 'lines' or detention when at school. It's a very effective way of keeping us in line

How should I know what the code is for counting? I didn't program the whole database, did I? I'm saying that maybe something in the original code got messed up?
It should be fairly simple: one opening of large photo = 1 view. In the meantime it's not, as was shown in other threads.

Is there any news on this?
The views for shots outside the top five or so photos remains very disappointing and way below what we would have expected in times gone by.
I had a recent shot accepted - the type (though 'standard') which you would expect would attract some hundreds of views at MAN. Nothing like that has been achieved and it calls into question why the views are that low. The counters are clearly not completely broken so can it be that the number of viewers has dropped a lot after all?

I agree, I have been told my DM that the hit counters are fixed so I uploaded a JFK test shot. Will see what happens.
Obama could have went to see wounded soldiers, he went to the gym instead. McCain, country first.

Wasn't there a bug that inflated view counts? If so, could DMs bug fix have actually fixed this bug too, and made the counters accurate for the first time?

Definitely not the case. I've been experimenting for a couple of days, accessing some old shots from my friends' computers and also computers from work, using various search methods. Only about one in four hits registered.

Quoting Ptrjong (Reply 14): Yes, I wouldn't be surprised if the hit count was correct now.
I don't know what to think now - it still seems to me that things are wrong, but also I don't see evidence of 'manual' daily corrections. If so the photos I am looking at as tests are getting almost no views at all.
I have to say I find this disheartening - particularly as one who has worked to stick by A.net through all that we have been through recently. But I too am now considering withdrawing my photos from the queue and my future uploading in the present climate. I find it impossible to reconcile the highest of standards the site places on me as a photographer, through the screening team, with the standard of the service provided for photos that get through that filter. I cannot see the home page as reflecting the highest of standards and something seems to be working against my (less than eye-catching) photos that do not make it into the top few of the day getting to a viewing public - the whole point of uploading in the first place.
I consider A.net has the highest standards for its photos and the equivalent must be provided in return for photographers who invest their time and effort in providing such material. For too long now this has not been forthcoming.
I hope some news will be on the horizon as a new week begins.

No way I'd think. How many unique visitors does A.net get a day, was it 500,000 or a million? No way only a very small percentage clicks through the top 24 photos...
but then again, it could be all the site's visitors are driven away again so quickly because the ads now get better placement on the new site.
Hmm lets see what was uploaded in the last....ooh uah, free ipod?

I really dont think that a simple design change can drive away visitors in the way you describe - although most people around here don't like it, lots of others do, and when I've shown the design to those who've never seen A.net before they like it. So I really doubt that's going to be true. The top 24 photos now have a massive prominence on the page, so if anything, I would have thought that click would go up. Personally, I've been opening up the Top 24 a lot more often since the change.
I think it's more likely that this is just a bug, and hopefully we'll see a fix to this soon
